What is my face? |
The face you chose on our home page represents you during your virtual field trip. You'll see your face in every location you visit. If other people are visiting the same place at the same time, you'll see their faces, and they'll see you too!

How do I move from building to building? |
Moving around is easy! You have two choices: navigating or "walking." You can also put your mouse over objects to learn more about them.
Navigating |
The menu that's on the left of the screen will take you from place to place. Just click on the buttons to go to different places on the field trip.
Walking |
The fun way to move around is to "walk." There are five places where you can walk: JPL Outside, the Museum, the Museum Gallery, Mission Control and the Rover Lab. When you are in any one of these places, just use your mouse to click where you want to go. For instance, if you're Outside, click the door of a building and then you'll go inside.

How do I chat? |
At the bottom of every screen is a "Say" box.
Start typing inside the box. Based on the letters you have typed, a suggested completion of your phrase will be displayed. Press the Enter key on your keyboard when you are done. You can view the complete list of phrases you can say. To chat, type a phrase from the list and hit return.
Your chat phrase will show up in a bubble next to your head, and everybody else who is in the same place as you will see it. Likewise, when others chat, you will see their chat bubble next to their heads.
A list of pre-selected phrases for game play is the only chat that is allowed on the virtual field trip.

Why can't I say anything I want? |
For your privacy and safety, we only allow a list of pre-selected phrases to be used for chat. These phrases allow you to play the games with others on the site. You cannot use the chat to exchange any other information. You can see a list of the phrases you can use. You can also read our privacy statement.

What are souvenirs? |
Souvenirs are objects you can collect during your field trip. Keep a look out for them during your tour. You'll find planets and other celestial bodies in the Museum Gallery, and you can earn spacecraft souvenirs by playing the game in Mission Control. You can share your souvenirs with your friends. (See "How do I share my souvenirs?" for more instructions.) And don't worry, you won't lose the souvenirs that you share.
At the end of your field trip, print your own personalized JPL badge by clicking on the Souvenirs button on the left side of the screen. Your badge will show all the souvenirs that you've collected.

How do I share my souvenirs? |
You can share souvenirs with others by typing "toss < name of souvenir > < angle in degrees >". For example, to toss your Jupiter souvenir to someone on your right, type "toss Jupiter 0". To toss it to someone on your left, type "toss Jupiter 180." See "What is an angle?" below for more information on how to share.

What is an angle? |
On our site, we use angles to indicate the direction you want to toss an object. First, think of the room you're in as a circle, and you're standing in the middle.
Then, decide where you want to toss. Look at the protractor below as a guide for choosing the correct angle. A long time ago, mathematicians decided to divide a circle into 360 degrees. 1/4th of a circle is 90 degrees (360/4). 1/6th is 60 degrees (360/6). Out of habit, we start counting from the right side of the circle and go counterclockwise.
When you type, "toss Saturn 180," you will be tossing your souvenir to the left. If you type, "toss Saturn 90," your souvenir will go straight up. "Toss Saturn 225" will send your souvenir down and to the left.
You can print and cut out the protractor below to help you figure out what angle you want to toss a souvenir. If you don't have a printer, just take a piece of paper and trace it right off the screen. Cut out the small circle at the center of the protractor, and position your head in the middle.
